Wasakam Indigenous Food Sovereignty Camps
Over the past 4 years, Wasakam has hosted many food sovereignty camps as free community events where we have;
- Received traditional cooking teachings
- Harvested and processed buffalo
- Harvested and processed rabbits
- Harvested wild plant foods such as cattails, berries, teas, for preparing traditional dishes
- Learned to tan hides
- Learned to waterbath can and pressure can
- Learned to cut meat, smoke meat, and make Pimihkan
- Learned to smoke fish
- Learned to cook on an open fire
- Learned to start fires without matches and lighters
- Learned about our relationship with the land, plants and animals.
We have hosted several pipe ceremonies and have supported fasters on the land.
As we grow, we are also preparing to host a fishing camp in Northern Alberta in 2025.
